Presents “Nikos Gatsos - 20 songs and Amorgos”

Nikos Gatsos (born in Asea, Arkadia in 1911) wrote just one poem during his entire career. “Amorgos”, is named after the Cyclades Island, a place the poet never visited. The island’s name, not quoted again within the lyrics of the poem, was used for the sound of the word itself, as a symbol of light and the Aegean legacy. This poem, which is considered a masterpiece of Surrealism, representing all that the artist had to say in this art form, completed his poetic work.

The show titled “Nikos Gatsos - 20 songs and Amorgos”, features Chryssoula Kehagioglou, Babis Koulouras and Antonis Konsolakis on vocals. The latter one also did all the arrangements and plays the bouzouki. The other performing musicians are Nikos Roussos (piano), Nikos Apergis (harmonica, accordion), Makis Printezis (guitar), Vangelis Aragiannis (bass), Mihalis Katahanas (violin) and Georgia Litsa (santouri). Historian Manos Telonis edited the texts. Nikoletta Rousou-Kouloura reads incidents of the artist’s life and reviews of his work and Babis Koulouras recites by heart the whole “Amorgos” poem unit-by-unit. The show (90 min. approx.) begins with a 10-minute video in which remarkable Greek artists such as composers Manos Hatzidakis, Stavros Xarhakos and Dionisis Savvopoulos, writer Kostas Georgousopoulos and Gatsos’ partner in life Agathi Dimitrouka, talk about the poet, who also can be seen in some scenes of the film.

This tribute to Nikos Gatsos has been presented in Syros island’s Apollo Theatre (twice), Amorgos island, University of Helsinki, New York, Boston’s Malioteio Theatre and Somerville, Massachusetts.

The show has also been programmed to be performed in Rhodes island, Delphoi, Prespes, Stockholm,  Madrid, Istanbul, etc.
